About Mazda Cosmo
The Mazda Cosmo is a series of sports and luxury coupes best known for introducing and showcasing Mazda’s rotary-engine technology. The original Cosmo Sport, sold overseas as the 110S, arrived in 1967 as a low-volume two-seat sports car with futuristic styling. It was Mazda’s first rotary-powered production vehicle and the first volume-produced sports car to use a two-rotor engine.
The name returned in 1975 on the larger Cosmo AP, a premium two-door specialty car offered with rotary and conventional piston engines. Export versions included the Mazda RX-5. The more luxurious Cosmo L, introduced in 1977, featured distinctive formal styling and a landau-style roof.
A further generation launched in 1981 with aerodynamic design, retractable headlamps and a choice of two-door and four-door bodies. It continued the model’s move away from a pure sports-car role towards refined grand touring and personal luxury.
The final version was the Eunos Cosmo, introduced in Japan in 1990 as a high-end two-door coupe. Two-rotor and three-rotor turbocharged versions were offered, with the three-rotor model combining sequential twin turbocharging with advanced in-car electronics. Across its generations, the Cosmo occupied a flagship or near-flagship position, linking distinctive design, long-distance comfort and Mazda’s most ambitious rotary engineering.
