About Mazda Carol
The Mazda Carol is a Japanese kei car positioned as the smallest conventional passenger model in Mazda’s domestic line-up. Introduced in 1962 as the four-seat Carol 360, it used a rear-mounted 358 cc four-cylinder engine. A four-door body and the larger-engined Carol 600 broadened the early range before production ended in 1970.
Mazda revived the name in 1989 for the front-wheel-drive Autozam Carol. This and the following generation shared mechanical foundations with the Suzuki Alto but featured distinctive rounded bodywork. Retro-styled Carol Custom and Carol Classic versions also appeared. From the fourth generation, launched in 1998, the Carol became more directly related to the Alto and has continued as a Suzuki-produced model supplied to Mazda.
Across eight generations, the Carol has evolved from a small sedan into a five-door hatchback designed mainly for everyday urban transport. Current versions use 660 cc petrol engines, with standard petrol and mild-hybrid choices, CVT automatic transmission, and either two- or four-wheel drive. The model is known for its compact footprint, low running costs, straightforward controls and efficient use of cabin space. Within Mazda’s range, it serves as an accessible, practical alternative to the brand’s larger cars and taller kei models.
