About Mazda AZ-Offroad
The Mazda AZ-Offroad was a compact three-door off-road vehicle sold in Japan from 1998 to 2014. Developed for the kei-car category, it was supplied to Mazda by Suzuki and closely related to the third-generation Suzuki Jimny. The model gave Mazda a specialised off-roader alongside its more road-focused small cars and kei models.
Only one generation was produced, although it received equipment, styling and interior updates during its long production run. Early versions were offered in XL and better-equipped XC grades, while later ranges centred on the XC. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available, depending on year and specification.
The AZ-Offroad used a turbocharged 660 cc engine and part-time four-wheel drive. Its separate ladder frame, rigid-axle suspension, low-range gearing, 16-inch wheels and relatively high ground clearance distinguished it from car-based compact SUVs. Drivers could select two- or four-wheel drive, with later models adopting dashboard switches for easier operation.
Within Mazda’s Japanese lineup, the AZ-Offroad occupied a narrow but practical niche. It combined kei-car dimensions with genuine rough-road hardware, making it suitable for confined urban roads, rural use and recreational driving. Its key qualities are compact size, simple mechanical construction, strong off-road ability for its class and close technical relationship with the Jimny.
