About Mazda 626
Mazda 626 was the export-market name used from 1978 for Mazda’s Capella family car, which had originated in Japan in 1970. Sold until 2002, it occupied the compact-to-midsize part of Mazda’s passenger-car range and served as one of the brand’s core global models. The Mazda6 replaced it in North America for the 2003 model year.
Across five 626-era generations, the range evolved from a rear-wheel-drive design to a front-wheel-drive platform in 1982. Four-door sedans formed the centre of the line-up, while selected generations and markets also received coupes, five-door hatchbacks or liftbacks, and station wagons. Specifications varied by region, with petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and occasional turbocharged, V6, four-wheel-drive and four-wheel-steering versions.
The 626 was positioned as a practical family car rather than a luxury or high-performance model. It became known for balanced road manners, efficient packaging, everyday comfort and relatively restrained styling. Some versions were produced in the United States as well as Japan, reflecting the model’s importance to Mazda’s international growth. Although names and body styles differed between markets, the 626 consistently filled the role of Mazda’s mainstream family saloon and wagon before the Mazda6 era.
