About Mazda 323
The Mazda 323 was a compact passenger car sold internationally from 1977 to 2003. It belonged to the Mazda Familia family, a name used mainly in Japan, and was also marketed under names including GLC and Protegé in some regions. Across six main 323 generations, it served as one of Mazda’s core small family cars.
Early versions used rear-wheel drive, while the 1980 generation introduced front-wheel drive and established the basic layout followed by most later models. Depending on generation and market, the range included three- and five-door hatchbacks, four-door saloons, estates, vans and a cabriolet. The more distinctively styled 323F or Familia Astina added a sporty fastback form.
Most variants were designed for practical daily transport, with compact dimensions, useful cabin space and a broad choice of petrol or diesel engines. The model was generally positioned below the larger Mazda 626, competing in the mainstream compact class.
Performance versions gave the 323 a stronger enthusiast identity. Turbocharged, full-time four-wheel-drive models such as the GTX and GT-R were developed with rally use in mind and remain among the best-known variations.
The 323 is chiefly remembered as an accessible, versatile compact with straightforward engineering and some unusually sporty derivatives. Its place in Mazda’s global range was taken by the Mazda3 in 2003.
