About Mazda 121
The Mazda 121 name was used for several distinct vehicles rather than one continuous global model line. It first appeared in 1975 on export versions of the Mazda Cosmo, but it became best known as a small, practical passenger car sold in selected markets from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.
The first small-car version was a three-door hatchback related to the Ford Festiva and positioned below the larger Mazda 323. Its compact dimensions and straightforward front-wheel-drive layout suited economical urban transport. The next major version, introduced in the early 1990s, was derived from the Autozam Revue. This four-door saloon became recognisable for its tall, rounded “bubble” styling, spacious cabin and available folding canvas roof.
From 1996, the 121 badge covered two further variations depending on the market. Some countries received the first-generation Mazda Demio, a tall five-door hatchback with flexible seating and useful luggage capacity. Europe also received a Mazda-badged version of the Ford Fiesta.
Across these versions, the 121 generally occupied Mazda’s entry-level or subcompact position. It is known for manoeuvrability, efficient use of interior space, simple petrol powertrains and distinctive variations shaped by Mazda’s former partnership with Ford.
