About Maserati Shamal

The Maserati Shamal is a high-performance grand touring coupé produced from 1990 to 1996. Developed during the De Tomaso era, it was the most extreme evolution of the Biturbo family and sat at the top of Maserati’s coupé range. It used the shortened platform associated with the Biturbo Spyder and Karif, with a wider body designed by Marcello Gandini.

Its defining feature is a 3.2-litre, 32-valve twin-turbo V8 driving the rear wheels through a six-speed Getrag manual gearbox. Rated at 326 hp, it provided stronger performance than the V6-powered Biturbo derivatives and was positioned as a demanding, driver-focused flagship. Small rear seats gave the two-door car a compact 2+2-style layout.

The range centred on one core body and powertrain configuration rather than multiple engine or body-style choices. Differences between individual cars mainly reflect production year, market specification, colour and equipment. Maserati built only 369 examples, making the Shamal a particularly rare model.

The Shamal is known for its forceful turbocharged performance, muscular proportions, angular rear wheelarches and black central roof pillar. Its engineering and styling also influenced the later second-generation Ghibli, linking Maserati’s 1980s Biturbo models with its more developed 1990s performance coupés.
