About Maserati Merak

The Maserati Merak is a rear-mid-engined 2+2 sports coupé produced from 1972 to 1983. Developed during Maserati’s Citroën-controlled period, it shared much of its steel structure and Giugiaro-designed bodywork with the V8-powered Bora. A more compact V6 engine created space for two small rear seats, giving the Merak greater everyday flexibility than many contemporary mid-engined cars.

The original model used a 3.0-litre V6 and five-speed manual transmission. Early cars also featured several Citroën-influenced hydraulic systems and interior details. The Merak SS, introduced in 1976, offered lower weight, increased power and revised styling. The later Merak 2000 GT used a 2.0-litre V6, primarily to suit the Italian market, where cars with engines larger than two litres faced higher taxation. Specifications and equipment varied by year and destination market.

Positioned below the Bora, the Merak provided a more accessible route into Maserati’s exotic sports-car range while retaining a distinctive Italian design. It is particularly known for its wedge-shaped profile, open rear flying buttresses and unusual combination of mid-engine proportions with 2+2 seating. Approximately 1,830 examples were built, making it a relatively rare but important model in Maserati’s 1970s and early-1980s lineup.
