About Maserati Khamsin

The Maserati Khamsin is a front-engined 2+2 grand touring coupé produced from 1974 to 1982. Conceived as the successor to the Ghibli, it occupied the upper end of Maserati’s range and offered a more traditional, practical alternative to the mid-engined Bora.

First shown in 1972, the Khamsin was Maserati’s first series-production model styled by Bertone. Marcello Gandini created its low, wedge-shaped body, distinguished by a broad glass rear panel and concealed headlamps. Its layout combined a 4.9-litre V8 with rear-wheel drive, independent suspension and a choice of five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission.

Citroën owned Maserati during the model’s development, and the Khamsin used high-pressure hydraulics for systems including the brakes, steering, clutch and headlamp operation. These features gave it an unusual technical character alongside its conventional grand touring configuration.

The Khamsin remained largely a single-model range, with differences mainly involving transmission choice and market-specific equipment. Only around 430 examples were built, reflecting its high price, limited market and the difficult conditions for large-engined performance cars after the 1970s oil crisis. It is best known for its rarity, distinctive Bertone design, strong V8 performance and position among Maserati’s final classic front-engined grand tourers of the era.
