About Maserati Karif
The Maserati Karif is a compact, high-performance coupé from the Biturbo era. Presented at the 1988 Geneva Motor Show and produced from 1988 to 1991, it was conceived as a more focused sporting model within Maserati’s twin-turbo range. Its factory designation is Tipo AM339, and only 221 examples were built.
The Karif used the shortened platform developed for the Biturbo Spyder but added a fixed steel roof. Its wheelbase was 114 mm shorter than that of the regular Biturbo coupé, while structural reinforcement inherited from the Spyder improved rigidity. Although officially classified as a 2+2, it was intended mainly for two occupants, with additional luggage space behind the front seats.
Power came from Maserati’s 2.8-litre twin-turbo V6, featuring three valves per cylinder and a single overhead camshaft. Catalysed and non-catalysed specifications offered different outputs and performance figures. The Karif did not develop into a broad family of trims; it remained a specialised, low-volume derivative.
Within Maserati’s line-up, it combined grand-touring equipment with compact dimensions and a stronger emphasis on acceleration and handling than the more practical Biturbo variants. It is chiefly known for its unusual closed-roof Spyder-based body, forceful turbocharged performance and rarity.
