About Maserati Ghibli
The Maserati Ghibli name has been applied to three distinct model lines. The original, introduced in 1966 and sold from 1967, was a low-slung V8 grand tourer offered as a coupé and Spyder. A twin-turbo V6 coupé revived the name from 1992 to 1998. In 2013, Ghibli returned as a four-door luxury sports sedan.
The modern Ghibli was positioned below the larger Quattroporte, giving Maserati a competitor in the executive car class. Built near Turin, it combined a coupé-like profile and frameless door glass with a practical five-seat cabin and conventional boot. Rear-wheel drive was standard on many versions, while the Q4 system provided all-wheel drive on selected models.
Powertrain availability varied by year and market. The range included twin-turbo V6 petrol engines, a V6 diesel that became Maserati’s first production diesel, and a four-cylinder mild-hybrid version. The high-performance Trofeo added a twin-turbo V8. Later trim lines included GT, Modena and Trofeo, alongside special editions such as the Ghibli 334 Ultima.
The Ghibli is known for distinctive Italian styling, strong performance and a more compact, driver-focused character than Maserati’s flagship sedan. Its combination of luxury appointments, long-distance comfort and sporting responses made it an important volume model within the brand’s modern line-up.
