About Maserati Biturbo
The Maserati Biturbo family was produced from 1981 to 1994. Developed during the De Tomaso era, it marked a shift towards smaller, more attainable cars and higher production volumes than Maserati’s traditional large grand tourers. The original model was a compact four-seat coupé with a front-mounted V6 engine, rear-wheel drive and two turbochargers.
The range expanded well beyond the first coupé. It included four-door saloons, the shorter-wheelbase Zagato Spyder and larger coupé variants. Later versions carried names such as 222, 228, 2.24v and Racing, while saloon derivatives included the 420, 422, 425 and 430. Engine capacity varied by market, with 2.0-litre models aimed mainly at Italy and 2.5- or 2.8-litre versions widely offered elsewhere.
Early cars used carburettors, while subsequent models gained fuel injection, intercooling and, in some versions, four-valve cylinder heads. Manual and automatic transmissions were available across the wider range.
The Biturbo is known for combining restrained, angular styling and a richly trimmed cabin with strong performance from a compact twin-turbocharged V6. It also became the foundation for much of Maserati’s 1980s and early-1990s range, making it an important bridge between the brand’s low-volume grand tourers and its later modern models.
