About Lotus Excel
The Lotus Excel is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand tourer produced at Hethel from 1982 to 1992. Known internally as the Type 89, it replaced the Éclat and was initially sold as the Éclat Excel. It occupied the more practical side of the Lotus range, offering occasional rear seats and useful touring ability alongside the brand’s traditional focus on handling.
Its wedge-shaped glassfibre body covered a steel backbone chassis, while power came from Lotus’s 2.2-litre twin-cam four-cylinder engine. Cooperation with Toyota brought components including the five-speed manual gearbox and differential, helping distinguish the Excel from its predecessor. A four-speed automatic transmission was also offered.
The original model was joined by the higher-powered Excel SE in 1985 and the automatic Excel SA in 1986. Later cars received styling, suspension and interior revisions, while the limited Celebration edition appeared near the end of production.
The Excel is best known for combining balanced chassis dynamics, accurate steering and a composed ride with greater comfort and everyday usability than many traditional Lotus sports cars. Although built in modest numbers, it remains a distinctive example of the company’s approach to a refined, long-distance performance coupé.
