About Lotus Esprit
The Lotus Esprit is a two-seat, mid-engined sports car produced at Hethel, England, from 1976 to 2004. Developed as Lotus moved further into the premium performance market, it became the brand’s longest-running production model and served as its flagship for much of that period.
The original Esprit was based closely on a sharp, wedge-shaped concept created by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign. Its low profile, composite body and lightweight chassis reflected Lotus principles, while its more exotic appearance and cabin positioned it above the company’s smaller sports cars. The model also gained broad recognition through appearances in two James Bond films.
Early S1, S2 and S3 versions used naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines. The Turbo Esprit added substantially stronger performance, while the restyled X180 introduced softer body lines and greater refinement from 1987. Later four-cylinder variants included the SE, S4, S4s, GT3 and limited-production Sport 300.
In 1996, the Esprit V8 introduced a Lotus-designed 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged engine. V8 GT, V8 SE, Sport 350 and Final Edition derivatives followed. Across its long production run, the Esprit remained known for responsive handling, low weight, distinctive styling and performance that placed Lotus among established exotic-car manufacturers.
