About Lotus Elise

The Lotus Elise is a compact two-seat sports car produced from 1996 to 2021. Designed as a return to Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s lightweight principles, it uses a mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and a bonded extruded-aluminium chassis beneath a composite body. Its simple construction, low mass and open-top layout placed driving response ahead of comfort or everyday practicality.

The Elise evolved through three broad phases commonly known as Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3. Early cars used Rover K-series engines, while later versions adopted Toyota-sourced four-cylinder units, including naturally aspirated and supercharged options. Variations ranged from relatively modest road models to lighter, more powerful Sport, Sprint and Cup editions. Limited-run Final Edition models marked the end of production in 2021.

Within the Lotus range, the Elise served as the brand’s smallest and most focused roadster, positioned below the larger Evora and closely related to the more track-oriented Exige. It also provided the basis for several specialist derivatives and competition cars. The model is chiefly known for precise steering, agile handling, strong feedback and performance achieved through low weight rather than high engine output.
