About Lotus Elan
The Lotus Elan (Type 100), generally known by its M100 development code, is a compact two-seat convertible introduced in 1989. It revived the Elan name used by Lotus sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s, but was a complete redesign for a different era. Developed while Lotus was owned by General Motors, it sat below the larger Esprit and Excel as the company’s smaller open sports car.
Most notably, the M100 is the only production Lotus built with front-wheel drive. It used a 1.6-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. A small number of naturally aspirated cars was made, but the range was dominated by the turbocharged Elan SE. North American cars received market-specific body and safety changes.
The first production period ran from 1989 to 1992. Lotus revived the model for 1994–1995 as the turbo-only Elan S2, limited to about 800 examples. The S2 brought 16-inch wheels, revised trim and detail changes to the steering and suspension while retaining the same basic design.
The M100 is known for secure cornering, strong traction, compact proportions and an unusually capable front-drive chassis. Its layout differed sharply from the rear-wheel-drive formula associated with the original Elan and most other Lotus models. Although it was not a major commercial success, the Type 100 occupies a distinctive place in the brand’s line-up and preceded the later Elise era.
