About Lotus Éclat
The Lotus Éclat is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand touring coupé produced from 1975 to 1982. Developed alongside the Lotus Elite, it shared that model’s steel backbone chassis and glass-reinforced composite construction but used a distinctive fastback body with a separate luggage area. The design was intended to combine Lotus handling with greater comfort and everyday practicality.
The original Type 76, built until 1980, used Lotus’s 1,973 cc 907 four-cylinder engine. Equipment-based versions included the 520, 521, 522 and 523, while transmission choices varied by specification and market. The updated Type 84, commonly called the Éclat S2.2, arrived in 1980 with the 2,174 cc 912 engine, a five-speed gearbox and detail changes to the body and equipment. Limited variations included the visually distinctive Sprint and the 1982 Riviera, which featured removable roof panels and additional luxury equipment.
Within the 1970s Lotus range, the Éclat occupied a more practical and refined position than the mid-engined Esprit. It is best known for its angular styling, compact 2+2 layout, lightweight construction and handling-focused chassis. Production ended in 1982, when the design evolved into the Éclat Excel and later the Lotus Excel.
