About Lotus Carlton

The Lotus Carlton is a limited-production, high-performance four-door saloon created through a collaboration between Lotus and General Motors. Built from 1990 to 1992, it used the Vauxhall Carlton GSi and Opel Omega as its basis but was extensively re-engineered by Lotus. UK cars carried the Lotus Carlton name, while continental European versions were sold as the Lotus Omega. Approximately 950 examples were completed.

Known internally as the Lotus Type 104, the model demonstrated how the company’s engineering expertise could transform a practical executive car. Lotus enlarged the straight-six engine to 3.6 litres and added twin turbochargers, raising output to 377 bhp. The suspension, steering, brakes and aerodynamics were also revised, and a six-speed manual gearbox was fitted. It was offered in one main specification and a single colour, Imperial Green.

The Carlton is best known for combining four-door space and long-distance comfort with performance that challenged contemporary supercars. Its 176 mph top speed made it the fastest production four-door saloon of its era and attracted considerable media and political attention in Britain. Within the Lotus range, it stood apart from the brand’s lightweight two-seat sports cars as a discreet but exceptionally fast super-saloon.
