About Lotus 340R
The Lotus 340R is a limited-production, two-seat sports car derived from the first-generation Elise. It appeared as a concept at the 1998 Birmingham International Motor Show and entered production in 2000. Officially named the Lotus Elise 340R, it was built in a run of 340 cars and represented one of the most specialised road-going models in the Lotus range.
Its minimalist body has no conventional roof or doors, giving the car a distinctive open cockpit and reducing unnecessary weight. Underneath, the 340R uses the Elise’s lightweight aluminium structure and a mid-mounted 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. Standard cars produced 177 bhp through a five-speed manual transmission and had a quoted weight of 601 kg. A 190 bhp track-only option was also available, supported by more circuit-focused components.
The name refers to the targeted 340 bhp-per-ton power-to-weight ratio achievable with the higher-output specification, rather than only to the production total. Within the Lotus lineup, the 340R sat beyond the regular Elise as a more exposed and uncompromising driver’s car, aimed at enthusiasts who valued low mass, direct responses and track capability over everyday practicality. Its futuristic styling also influenced the later Series 2 Elise, while its rarity and unusual construction make it one of the brand’s most recognisable limited models.
