About Lincoln Town Car
The Lincoln Town Car was a full-size luxury car sold for the 1981–2011 model years. Its name had previously identified a premium version of the Continental, but from 1981 it became a separate model and Lincoln’s flagship sedan. Most examples were four-door sedans, although a two-door version was offered for 1981.
Three generations were produced: 1981–1989, 1990–1997 and 1998–2011. All used a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and Ford’s body-on-frame Panther platform, shared with the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. This traditional construction distinguished the Town Car from many later luxury sedans.
Trim names varied by year and included Executive, Signature, Cartier, Ultimate, Signature Limited and Designer Series. Extended-wheelbase L models provided additional rear-seat space, while commercial specifications supported limousine, livery and funeral-vehicle conversions.
The Town Car is chiefly known for its spacious cabin, large exterior dimensions, soft ride and emphasis on rear-passenger comfort rather than sporty handling. Its size, restrained luxury and suitability for professional transport gave it a distinctive position among American premium cars and made it especially familiar in executive and chauffeur-driven service.
