About Lincoln Continental
The Lincoln Continental is one of the brand’s longest-running and best-known nameplates. Earlier generations established it as an American luxury car centred on formal design, passenger space and a smooth ride, and it often served as Lincoln’s flagship. From the seventh generation, the Continental evolved into a more modern sedan with changing dimensions and drivetrains.
The seventh generation, sold from 1982 to 1987, was a smaller rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan. The eighth generation, from 1988 to 1994, adopted front-wheel drive and a V6 engine, while the ninth, produced from 1995 to 2002, continued with front-wheel drive and used a V8. These models offered a more contemporary alternative to the larger, traditionally styled Town Car.
After a long break, the name returned for 2017 on the tenth-generation Continental, a full-size flagship sedan offered through 2020. It came with front- or all-wheel drive and a choice of V6 engines, including a Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-litre twin-turbo unit rated at up to 400 hp. The limited Coach Door Edition revived the model’s distinctive centre-opening doors.
The final Continental is known for its quiet cabin, spacious seating, comfort-focused ride and restrained styling rather than overt sportiness. Its discontinuation formed part of Lincoln’s move away from sedans towards an SUV-only range.
