About Lexus SC
The Lexus SC was the brand’s luxury grand tourer, produced in two generations from 1991 to 2010. It entered the early Lexus range as a rear-wheel-drive two-door, blending performance with long-distance comfort, refined powertrains and distinctive styling. Its character generally favoured smoothness and cabin quality over the sharper focus of a dedicated sports car.
The first generation was a fixed-roof coupe. Major versions were the V8-powered SC 400 and inline-six SC 300, with specifications and transmission choices varying by market and model year. Closely related to the Toyota Soarer sold in Japan, it helped establish Lexus beyond luxury saloons.
The second generation adopted a different format. Sold as the SC 430, it combined a 4.3-litre V8, rear-wheel drive and a power-retractable metal roof, functioning as both a coupe and convertible. Its small rear seats made it a 2+2. Notable qualities included a quiet cabin, leather and wood trim, a smooth ride and extensive luxury equipment.
Within the Lexus lineup, the SC was a specialised, style-led model: more intimate than the LS or GS saloons and more comfort-oriented than a pure sports car. Production ended in July 2010. The nameplate had no direct successor, although the later LC assumed a broadly similar flagship grand-touring role.
