About Lexus ES
The Lexus ES is a midsize luxury sedan introduced in 1989 as part of the brand’s original line-up alongside the flagship LS. It became one of Lexus’s core global models, positioned as a more accessible and comfort-focused alternative to the LS while offering greater cabin space and refinement than the brand’s smaller sport sedans.
Across eight generations, the ES has evolved from a relatively conservative executive car into a larger, more distinctive sedan. Most generations have used a front-wheel-drive layout, with all-wheel drive available on selected versions. Model ranges have varied by country and year, including four-cylinder and V6 petrol engines, ES 300h hybrids and F Sport variants. The eighth generation added the ES 350h hybrid and the first battery-electric versions, the front-wheel-drive ES 350e and all-wheel-drive ES 500e.
Production locations have differed over time and by market, including plants in Japan and, for earlier North American models, Kentucky. Current eighth-generation models are assembled in Japan. Within the Lexus range, the ES is known primarily for its quiet cabin, smooth ride, spacious seating and emphasis on everyday comfort. It competes in the executive luxury sedan class, balancing premium equipment and efficiency with a less performance-led character than many rear-wheel-drive rivals.
