About Land Rover Freelander
The Land Rover Freelander was a compact SUV produced from 1997 to 2014. It introduced the brand to a smaller, more road-oriented market than the traditional Defender and Discovery, while retaining useful all-weather and light off-road ability. Its unibody construction and independent suspension also marked a significant departure from Land Rover’s earlier utility-focused designs.
The first-generation Freelander was offered in three-door and five-door forms, including a three-door Softback with a removable rear roof section. Petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and permanent four-wheel drive were available. Equipment such as Hill Descent Control helped distinguish it from conventional compact crossovers.
The second generation arrived as the Freelander 2 and was sold as the LR2 in North America and some other markets. Available only as a five-door SUV, it offered a more refined cabin, improved road manners and a broader range of comfort and safety features. Most versions used four-wheel drive, although front-wheel-drive models were introduced in selected markets.
Positioned as Land Rover’s accessible compact model, the Freelander became one of the company’s best-selling vehicles and helped establish the premium compact SUV class. It was replaced by the Discovery Sport after production ended in 2014.
