About Lamborghini Murciélago
The Lamborghini Murciélago is a two-seat, mid-engined V12 supercar produced from 2001 to 2010. Introduced at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show, it replaced the Diablo and became the brand’s flagship. It was also Lamborghini’s first entirely new model of the Audi-Volkswagen era, marking a period of expanded production and wider international reach.
Its defining features include a naturally aspirated V12 engine, standard all-wheel drive, a low wedge-shaped body and Lamborghini’s signature scissor doors. Early models used a 6.2-litre engine, while the later LP 640 adopted a more powerful 6.5-litre unit alongside substantial mechanical and styling revisions. Both coupé and open-top Roadster forms were offered.
The range culminated in the LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, a lighter and more focused version with increased power and more aggressive aerodynamics. Other variations included the limited LP 650-4 Roadster, 40th Anniversary edition and LP 640 Versace.
Positioned above the smaller Gallardo from 2003, the Murciélago continued Lamborghini’s line of dramatic V12 flagships. A total of 4,099 examples were built before the Aventador succeeded it in 2011. The model is known for its striking proportions, high-speed performance, mechanical character and strong connection to the Countach and Diablo tradition.
