About Kia Rhino

The Kia Rhino was a medium-duty cab-over truck introduced in South Korea in 1988. Kia describes the original model as the country’s first 5-ton truck. It was developed for operators requiring greater payload capacity, efficiency and comfort than smaller commercial vehicles could provide.

Two principal generations were produced. The first-generation Rhino established the name in the 4- to 5-ton class, while the redesigned New Rhino arrived in 1998. This second version consolidated Kia’s medium-truck range and remained in production into the early 2000s. Specifications differed by year and configuration, but rear-wheel drive and inline six-cylinder diesel power were typical.

The range included 4.5- and 5-ton models, with different chassis lengths and bodies for general cargo transport, construction and specialist work. Common forms included dropside cargo and dump trucks, while the chassis also supported equipment such as cranes, tanks, refuse systems and enclosed cargo bodies.

Within Kia’s contemporary commercial lineup, the Rhino sat above the compact Bongo and below the larger Granto. It is mainly known as a practical working truck with straightforward cab-over packaging, a load-focused chassis and broad body adaptability. The Rhino also represents Kia’s former presence in the conventional medium-duty truck market before the company’s commercial range became more concentrated on lighter vehicles.
