About Kia Retona
The Kia Retona is a compact, three-door off-road vehicle produced in South Korea from 1998 to 2003. Developed by Asia Motors and initially sold under the Asia name in some markets, it succeeded the Rocsta before joining Kia’s range. Its military-derived platform, upright body and short dimensions gave it a more utilitarian character than a road-focused compact SUV.
The Retona used body-on-frame construction and four-wheel drive. Depending on market and model year, it was available with 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol or turbo-diesel power. Closed-roof wagon and canvas-top configurations were offered, with manual and automatic transmissions appearing in certain versions.
There was one main generation, followed by an updated Retona Cruiser version around 2000. The revisions refreshed the design without changing its basic role as a small, rugged 4x4. It occupied a specialist position in Kia’s lineup, prioritising compact size, straightforward construction and off-road ability over passenger-car refinement.
The Retona is best known for its squared-off appearance, high stance and close connection to Kia’s military-vehicle experience. It remains an uncommon model that sits between a lightweight recreational 4x4 and a traditional compact SUV.
