About Kia Qianlima
The Kia Qianlima was a China-market small four-door saloon produced by Dongfeng Yueda Kia in Yancheng, Jiangsu. Launched in December 2002, it was the joint venture’s first major passenger car and an important early model in Kia’s expansion in China. It was derived from the Hyundai Accent of the period but marketed with Kia branding and a Chinese name meaning a horse capable of travelling great distances.
Rather than spanning several distinct generations, the Qianlima retained one basic design with successive updates. Qianlima II arrived in 2003, followed by a 2004 model-year revision and the New Qianlima in 2005. Changes mainly involved styling details, equipment, trim levels and the structure of the range rather than a complete redesign.
Most versions used naturally aspirated 1.3- or 1.6-litre petrol engines. Manual transmissions were common, while selected 1.6-litre variants offered an automatic gearbox. The range included economical entry models and better-equipped GL, DLX and GLS versions.
Within Kia’s Chinese lineup, the Qianlima occupied the affordable small-car class below larger saloons such as the Cerato and Optima. It was known for compact dimensions, a practical boot, straightforward mechanicals and competitive pricing. Newer Kia models, particularly the Rio, later assumed its role.
