About Kia Potentia
The Kia Potentia is a rear-wheel-drive premium sedan introduced in South Korea in 1992. Based on the HC-series Mazda Luce, also known in some markets as the Mazda 929, it gave Kia an established platform for entering the executive-car segment. Kia classifies it as an E-segment model, with formal, angular styling and a hood-mounted emblem reflecting its upmarket role.
The Potentia had one core generation but appeared in two main phases. Early versions were offered with 2.0- and 2.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engines and a 3.0-litre V6, with the V6 President serving as a high-grade version. A substantial Kia-developed facelift arrived in 1997 under the New Potentia name, bringing revised front and rear styling. Its range centred on 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 2.5-litre V6 petrol engines, while a 2.0-litre LPG version was also available.
Initially positioned near the top of Kia’s passenger-car range, the Potentia later sat below the larger Enterprise after that model appeared in 1997. Production continued until 2002. The Potentia is mainly known for introducing Kia to the Korean premium-sedan market, combining rear-wheel drive, six-cylinder availability and conservative executive styling in a model intended primarily for domestic buyers.
