About Kia Niro
The Kia Niro is a compact crossover developed around electrified powertrains. Introduced in 2016 and sold in North America from the 2017 model year, it was Kia’s first vehicle built on a dedicated eco-car platform. Its positioning combines the manageable dimensions and efficiency of a hatchback with the raised seating and practical layout associated with an SUV.
The first generation launched as a conventional hybrid, followed by a plug-in hybrid and a battery-electric model. The electric version was known as the e-Niro in some markets and as the Niro EV in others. This broad powertrain range helped establish the Niro as a central part of Kia’s early electrification strategy.
A second generation debuted in 2022, with sales beginning as a 2023 model in several markets. It retained the hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric formats while introducing more distinctive styling, a larger cabin and updated connectivity and driver-assistance technology. Availability varies by country and model year.
Within Kia’s range, the Niro sits between traditional compact cars and larger crossovers such as the Sportage. It is known mainly for efficient operation, useful passenger and cargo space, front-wheel-drive packaging and an urban-friendly footprint. Rather than being a performance or off-road model, it focuses on everyday practicality and offers buyers different levels of electrification in a familiar crossover format.
