About Kia Elan
The Kia Elan is a compact two-seat roadster introduced in South Korea in 1996. It was based on the Lotus Elan M100 after Kia acquired the rights and production equipment for the British sports car. Kia adapted the design for local manufacture, making the Elan one of the most unusual and specialised models in the company’s history.
The car retained the M100’s front-wheel-drive layout, low profile, folding fabric roof and pop-up headlamps. Kia fitted its own 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in place of the Lotus model’s 1.6-litre unit and revised details such as the rear lights. Production involved extensive hand assembly, reflecting the model’s low-volume character.
Unlike Kia’s mainstream passenger cars, the Elan had only one generation and a limited range of variations. The principal version used a five-speed manual transmission, while cars supplied to Japan were marketed under the Vigato name.
Positioned as a specialist sports car rather than a high-volume product, the Elan served as a distinctive image model within Kia’s late-1990s line-up. It is particularly known for combining Lotus-developed chassis engineering with Kia mechanical components. Its responsive handling, lightweight construction and rarity have since made it a notable model among enthusiasts of Korean and British sports cars.
