About Kia Credos
The Kia Credos is a mid-size, front-wheel-drive passenger car introduced in South Korea in 1995. It replaced the Concord in Kia’s range and sat above smaller models such as the Sephia, giving the brand a conventional family and business sedan for the competitive mid-size class. In several export markets, particularly Europe, it was sold as the Kia Clarus.
Although its underpinnings were related to the Mazda Capella/Cronos, also known as the Mazda 626, Kia treated the Credos as an important step in developing more of its own vehicle technology. Its 1.8-litre T8D DOHC four-cylinder engine was developed in-house. Other versions used 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, while selected later models offered a 2.0-litre V6. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on the market and specification.
The range is generally regarded as one generation with two main phases. The original Credos was followed in 1998 by the revised Credos II, which brought updated styling and equipment. Most examples are four-door sedans, but a five-door estate was also produced under names including Clarus Wagon and Parktown.
The Credos is known for its spacious cabin, generous luggage capacity, comfortable ride and value-focused market position. It helped broaden Kia’s international passenger-car range before the Optima assumed the brand’s mid-size role around 2000.
