About Kia Carstar
The Kia Carstar was a compact multi-purpose vehicle introduced in South Korea in 1999. Designed for family and commercial use, it combined a car-like driving position with a tall cabin and three-row seating. The same basic model was sold in some export markets as the Kia Joice.
Produced until 2002, the Carstar had a single generation rather than a long series of redesigns. A later update brought revised exterior details, but the vehicle’s core layout remained unchanged. Depending on specification, the cabin accommodated six or seven occupants, making it suitable for larger households and passenger-carrying duties.
Power came from 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. Buyers could choose between petrol and LPG versions, with manual and automatic transmissions offered. The LPG model was particularly relevant in South Korea, where its lower operating costs helped the Carstar find use as a commercial passenger vehicle.
Within Kia’s late-1990s range, the Carstar formed part of a broader MPV line-up alongside the smaller Carens and larger Carnival. It was positioned as a practical and relatively affordable middle option. The model is chiefly known for its spacious cabin, flexible seating and straightforward front-wheel-drive configuration rather than luxury, high performance or advanced technology.
