About Kia Capital

The Kia Capital is a compact four-door sedan introduced in South Korea in 1989. It was developed from the same Mazda Capella-derived architecture used for the larger Kia Concord, but with a shorter body and smaller engines. Within Kia’s range, it filled the space between the small Pride and the more expensive Concord.

Produced until 1996, the Capital belonged to a single generation that received several styling and equipment revisions. It used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and was initially offered with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Later versions included fuel-injected and DOHC 1.5-litre units, while selected variants used a 1.8-litre engine. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on specification.

The Capital was positioned as a well-equipped compact family saloon. Features such as power windows and a heated rear window helped distinguish higher trim levels at a time when this equipment was less common in its domestic class. Its angular three-box styling reflected the Mazda-based engineering and design conventions of the period.

The model is notable for supporting Kia’s expansion into South Korea’s compact-sedan market before the company moved towards more independently developed passenger cars. It overlapped with the newer Sephia during its final years, and the Sephia ultimately assumed its role in Kia’s line-up.
