About Kia Brisa

The Kia Brisa was a compact, rear-wheel-drive model family produced in South Korea from the 1970s until 1981. It occupies an important place in Kia’s lineup as the company’s first passenger car. The range began with the B-1000 light pickup in 1973, followed by the four-door S-1000 sedan in 1974. Production took place at Kia’s Sohari plant.

Built under licence using Mazda designs, the original Brisa was based on the Familia. Its modest dimensions, four-cylinder petrol engines and straightforward mechanical layout suited buyers seeking economical, practical transport. The pickup served small businesses, while sedan versions were used as private cars and taxis.

The Brisa did not progress through numerous conventional generations. Instead, the name covered two main model lines. The original model was joined by the larger and more refined Brisa II, derived from the Mazda Grand Familia and later associated with the K303 designation. Variations across the family included four-door sedans, a pickup and a K303 station wagon. Engine availability included 1.0- and 1.3-litre units, depending on the version.

Known mainly for affordability and utility rather than performance or luxury, the Brisa marked Kia’s move from light commercial vehicles into passenger-car production. Manufacturing ended under South Korea’s automotive industry rationalisation policy, making it a short-lived but historically significant part of the brand’s early development.
