About Kia Boxer
The Kia Boxer was a medium-duty cab-over truck produced in South Korea from 1971 to 1998. Introduced alongside the smaller Titan, it was one of Kia’s first four-wheeled trucks and Korea’s first domestically produced 4-ton truck. The Boxer marked Kia’s transition from three-wheeled utility vehicles to larger commercial vehicles for freight and industrial work.
Early Boxer trucks were based on a Mazda design and used rear-wheel drive with inline six-cylinder diesel engines. The original range centred on 4-ton models, with 4.5-ton versions also offered. Its conventional ladder-frame construction supported general cargo beds and specialist conversions, including recovery and municipal vehicles. Durability, payload capacity and straightforward mechanical design were central to its role.
The model is generally divided into two generations. The long-running first generation remained in production from 1971 until 1993 and received several styling and branding updates. The second generation, introduced in 1992 as the Wide Boxer, used a broader, more modern cab and continued as a 4-ton alternative below the larger Kia Rhino. Production ended in 1998 as Kia consolidated its medium-truck range.
The Boxer was a core product in Kia’s domestic commercial lineup, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. It is notable less for luxury or advanced equipment than for its importance in establishing Kia as a Korean truck manufacturer and supporting the brand’s later expansion in commercial vehicles.
