About Kia Besta
The Kia Besta is a cab-over light commercial vehicle introduced in South Korea in 1986 as the successor to Kia’s Bongo passenger van. Developed during Kia’s period of cooperation with Mazda, it was closely related to the contemporary Mazda Bongo platform but formed an important part of Kia’s expanding commercial range.
Offered as both a passenger minibus and a cargo van, the Besta served businesses, schools, shuttle operators and large families. Its compact exterior, spacious cabin and rear-wheel-drive layout suited urban transport as well as general commercial work. Most versions used four-cylinder diesel engines, with displacement and specifications varying by year and market.
The model remained one principal generation rather than progressing through several complete redesigns. Updates included the New Besta and Hi-Besta, along with different roof heights, seating arrangements and equipment levels. Later versions were also available with larger 2.2- and 2.7-litre diesel engines, while export-market configurations differed from those sold in Korea.
The Besta was positioned as a practical, relatively affordable van below larger buses and trucks in Kia’s line-up. It became known for efficient packaging, straightforward mechanical design and flexible passenger or cargo capacity. The newer Kia Pregio arrived in 1995, although Besta production continued alongside it in some markets into the late 1990s.
