About Jeep Dispatcher

The Jeep Dispatcher, commonly identified by the DJ model code, was a compact light commercial vehicle derived from Jeep’s CJ series. Introduced in the mid-1950s, it provided two-wheel-drive transport for delivery, fleet and service work where the CJ’s four-wheel-drive system was unnecessary. Production continued under Willys, Kaiser Jeep and later AMC and AM General, ending in 1984.

The original DJ-3A shared its basic form with the CJ-3A and was offered with several open and enclosed body configurations. A notable leisure-oriented variation was sold as the Gala and Surrey for hotels, resorts and private buyers. In 1965, the DJ-5 replaced the DJ-3A, using CJ-5-based styling. The related DJ-6 offered a longer wheelbase, while successive DJ-5 versions introduced revised engines, transmissions and body details.

Later Dispatchers are best known as US postal vehicles. Many had right-hand drive, a fully enclosed body, sliding side doors and a rear cargo area designed for frequent stops and convenient kerbside access. Within Jeep’s range, the Dispatcher served as the practical rear-wheel-drive counterpart to the off-road-focused CJ. Its compact dimensions, manoeuvrability, straightforward construction and distinctive delivery-van appearance remain its defining qualities.
