About Jeep Comanche
The Jeep Comanche is a compact, two-door pickup produced for the 1986–1992 model years. Known internally as the MJ, it was developed by American Motors and remained in production after Chrysler acquired AMC in 1987. It gave Jeep a smaller truck alongside the brand’s established off-road vehicles.
Closely related to the XJ Cherokee, the Comanche shared much of its front body, cabin, suspension and powertrain engineering with the SUV. Its structure combined a unitised cab and front section with frame rails supporting the cargo bed, an unusual design within the compact pickup class.
The Comanche was built in a single generation. Buyers could choose rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, as well as six-foot short-bed and seven-foot long-bed configurations. Versions varied by model year and included base or SporTruck models, Pioneer, Laredo and the sport-oriented Eliminator.
Engine choices included four-cylinder units, an early V6, a diesel in limited applications and Jeep’s 4.0-litre inline-six, which became one of the model’s best-known powertrains. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered.
Positioned against other compact pickups, the Comanche was known for practical dimensions, useful cargo capacity, solid-axle engineering and capable four-wheel-drive systems. Production ended after 1992, leaving it as a distinctive, relatively short-lived part of Jeep’s pickup lineage.
