About Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee is a long-running SUV nameplate introduced in 1974. It began as a sporty two-door version of the full-size Wagoneer, later adding four-door and wide-track variants. Over time, the Cherokee shifted from a traditional body-on-frame utility vehicle to smaller, more road-friendly SUVs while retaining a strong association with four-wheel drive and practical all-weather use.

The influential XJ generation, launched for 1984, established the Cherokee as a compact four-door SUV with unibody construction. Later KJ and KK generations continued the formula, although they were sold as the Jeep Liberty in North America and as the Cherokee in various other markets. The KL generation arrived for the 2014 model year, moving further towards the crossover class and offering versions from everyday trims to the off-road-focused Trailhawk.

Production of the KL ended in 2023, and the nameplate returned for 2026 with a new mid-size, two-row model. The current Cherokee uses a turbocharged hybrid powertrain and standard four-wheel drive, with Cherokee, Laredo, Limited and Overland trims.

Within Jeep’s range, the Cherokee sits above the smaller Compass and below the larger Grand Cherokee. It is known for combining manageable dimensions, useful passenger and cargo space, 4x4 capability and a broader everyday focus than the Wrangler.
