About Jaguar XJS
The Jaguar XJS is a luxury grand tourer produced from 1975 to 1996. Introduced as the marque’s successor to the E-type, it adopted a different character: less of a traditional sports car and more of a refined, high-speed touring model. Its shortened XJ saloon floorpan and related chassis components helped provide the comfort, handling and smooth ride associated with Jaguar’s larger cars.
The range began as the XJ-S coupé with a 5.3-litre V12 engine. A 3.6-litre six-cylinder option arrived in 1983, broadening its appeal. Body variations included the fixed-roof coupé, the XJ-SC cabriolet with removable roof panels, and a full convertible introduced in 1988. A major update followed in 1991, while later cars were offered with 4.0-litre six-cylinder and 6.0-litre V12 engines.
Known for its long bonnet, rear flying buttresses and distinctive proportions, the XJS occupied the sporting flagship position in Jaguar’s range. Its strengths were relaxed long-distance performance, a refined cabin and strong road presence rather than lightweight agility. The model also achieved notable touring-car competition success. More than 115,000 examples were built before production ended in April 1996, when it gave way to the XK8.
