About Jaguar XJ220
The Jaguar XJ220 is a limited-production, mid-engined two-seat supercar built from 1992 to 1994. It began as a dramatic 1988 concept and became a dedicated flagship project rather than a derivative of Jaguar’s XJ saloons or regular grand tourers. Final assembly took place at a purpose-built facility in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, through Jaguar Sport, a joint venture with Tom Walkinshaw Racing.
The road car differed substantially from the original concept. Instead of its proposed V12 engine and four-wheel drive, the production XJ220 used a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6, five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Its aluminium construction, low profile and long, aerodynamic shape were developed around very high-speed performance while retaining a leather-trimmed two-seat cabin.
Production was extremely limited, with Jaguar sources placing the total at roughly 280 cars. Most were standard road models, while the competition-focused XJ220C and rarer XJ220S road derivative introduced lighter bodywork and more aggressive specifications.
The XJ220 occupied a unique position above Jaguar’s contemporary sports and luxury cars. It is known for exceptional straight-line speed, rarity and distinctive proportions, and was among the fastest production cars of its era. It remains one of Jaguar’s clearest expressions of a purpose-built supercar.
