About Jaguar XJ
The Jaguar XJ was a full-size luxury saloon and the brand’s flagship four-door model for more than five decades. Introduced as the XJ6 in 1968, it consolidated several Jaguar saloon lines into one range and established a long-running formula built around comfort, performance and distinctive British styling. The XJ12 joined in 1972, adding a V12 engine to the line-up.
Early cars were divided into Series 1, 2 and 3 generations, with a relatively rare two-door XJ-C coupé also offered during the 1970s. Later generations are commonly identified by factory codes such as XJ40, X300, X308, X350 and X351. Depending on model and market, the range included six-cylinder, V8, V12 and diesel engines, plus standard- and long-wheelbase bodies. Notable variations included the performance-focused XJR and more luxurious Daimler or Vanden Plas derivatives.
Within Jaguar’s line-up, the XJ sat above smaller executive models and competed with other large premium saloons. It became known for combining a refined ride and spacious cabin with more responsive handling than many traditional luxury cars. Earlier generations retained a formal, low-slung appearance, while the final X351 adopted more contemporary styling and extensive aluminium construction. Production of that generation ended in 2019, closing the model’s continuous role as Jaguar’s flagship saloon.
