About Jaguar S-TYPE
The Jaguar S-TYPE is a rear-wheel-drive executive saloon introduced in 1998 and produced at Castle Bromwich from 1999 to 2007. Codenamed X200, it revived a name used in the 1960s and returned Jaguar to the compact luxury sports-saloon class. Its rounded grille, twin headlamps and flowing bodywork referenced earlier Jaguars, while the cabin typically combined traditional wood and leather trim with contemporary equipment.
Within Jaguar’s range, the S-TYPE sat below the flagship XJ and, after the X-TYPE arrived, above that smaller model. It competed with established premium executive saloons while offering more heritage-influenced styling. Rear-wheel drive, independent suspension and an emphasis on a supple ride gave it the blend of comfort and responsive handling associated with the brand.
Powertrain availability varied by year and market. The range included V6 petrol engines, naturally aspirated V8s and, in later European-market cars, a 2.7-litre V6 diesel. The performance-focused S-TYPE R used a supercharged 4.2-litre V8 with upgraded suspension and brakes. Major updates in 2002 and 2004 revised the engines, structure, styling and interior. Production ended in 2007, and the S-TYPE was succeeded by the more modern-looking XF.
