About INFINITI ESQ
The INFINITI ESQ is a subcompact crossover developed specifically for the Chinese market. Introduced in 2014, it was based closely on the first-generation Nissan Juke and shared much of its structure, cabin design and mechanical equipment. The model was manufactured in Japan and imported into China rather than produced through INFINITI’s local manufacturing operation.
Its styling drew heavily from the Juke Nismo, including an aerodynamic body kit, pronounced wheel arches and a sporty stance. Distinctive split-level front lighting, concealed rear door handles and prominent ESQ badging gave it an identity unlike other INFINITI vehicles of the period.
The range included front-wheel-drive versions with a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine and a higher-performance 1.6-litre turbocharged version with all-wheel drive. Both used continuously variable transmissions. Equipment and trim levels varied, with the turbo model positioned as the sportiest and most expensive choice.
The ESQ remained a single-generation model and was sold until the late 2010s without a major redesign. It occupied the smallest end of INFINITI’s crossover range and targeted younger urban buyers seeking a compact premium vehicle. It is best known for its unconventional appearance, city-friendly size and unusual position as a China-only INFINITI derived from a Nissan performance model.
