About Hyundai Santro
The Hyundai Santro is a compact five-door city hatchback best known for its tall-body design, practical cabin and role in establishing Hyundai in India. Introduced in September 1998 as a version of the Atos Prime, it was Hyundai Motor India’s first production model and became a key entry-level alternative in the country’s small-car market. Indian-built Santros were also exported to several overseas markets.
The model has two broad production eras. The original Santro remained on sale until 2014, receiving updates and versions such as the zipDrive and Santro Xing. Hyundai revived the name in 2018 with an all-new generation positioned as a replacement for the Eon. This later model retained the upright hatchback format while introducing more modern styling, equipment and safety features. It used a 1.1-litre petrol engine with manual or automated manual transmission options, while selected variants were available with a factory-fitted CNG system. Production ended again in 2022.
Within Hyundai’s range, the Santro sat below larger hatchbacks such as the Grand i10. It is chiefly associated with efficient use of interior space, good headroom, easy access and manageable dimensions for urban driving. Its combination of straightforward mechanicals, family-focused packaging and accessible positioning made it one of Hyundai’s most recognisable small cars.
