About Hyundai Santamo
The Hyundai Santamo is a seven-seat MPV produced from 1995 to 2002. Developed under the M2 project code, it was manufactured by Hyundai Precision Industry, whose vehicle operations were later transferred to Hyundai Motor. Its design was based on the second-generation Mitsubishi Chariot, adapted for Hyundai’s emerging recreational-vehicle range.
The Santamo remained a single generation throughout its production life. Its low, wagon-like body distinguished it from conventional vans and helped establish the MPV format in South Korea. Three-row seating, a spacious cabin and seats that could be folded to create a flatter load area made it suitable for family transport and leisure use.
Most versions used 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. Depending on model year and market, the range included petrol and LPG power, five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions, and front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configurations.
The main variation was the Santamo Plus, introduced with more rugged exterior details, increased ground clearance and leisure-oriented equipment. Despite its tougher appearance, it retained the practical MPV layout of the standard model. The Santamo is chiefly known as one of Hyundai’s earliest dedicated people carriers, combining passenger-car road manners with flexible interior space before newer-generation MPVs took over its role.
