About Hyundai Mistra

The Hyundai Mistra, known as the Mingtu in China, is a mid-size four-door sedan developed specifically for the Chinese market. It was introduced in 2013 and manufactured by Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture between Hyundai Motor and BAIC. Within the local range, it occupied the space between the Elantra and Sonata, offering more cabin room and a more formal appearance than Hyundai’s compact sedans while remaining below the Sonata in price and status.

The first generation used petrol engines, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged units, with manual or automatic transmissions depending on the model year. A 2017 facelift brought revised styling and updated interior technology. The Mistra became known mainly as a practical family and business sedan, with an emphasis on rear-seat space, comfort and accessible equipment.

A second generation was presented in 2020 and went on sale in 2021. It retained the traditional saloon layout but adopted more distinctive Hyundai styling, a digital-focused cabin and additional driver-assistance features. Buyers could choose between naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol versions, while a separate Mistra EV added a fully electric powertrain.

Unlike Hyundai’s global models, the Mistra remained closely tied to Chinese preferences and production. Its role was to provide a spacious, locally tailored alternative in the highly competitive mid-size sedan class.
