About Hyundai Matrix

The Hyundai Matrix is a compact five-door MPV introduced in 2001, primarily for European customers. Marketed as the Lavita in South Korea, it combined a relatively short body with a tall roof and upright cabin. Its Pininfarina styling gave it a distinctive appearance. Hyundai positioned the model as a practical alternative to a small hatchback, with an emphasis on passenger space, easy access and everyday versatility.

The Matrix remained a single-generation model, identified by the FC code. Hyundai updated it in 2005 and again in 2008 rather than introducing a full redesign. These revisions refreshed the exterior, equipment and engine range. Depending on the market and model year, major versions included 1.6- and 1.8-litre petrol models and a 1.5-litre CRDi diesel. Manual gearboxes were widely offered, with automatic transmission available on selected petrol variants.

Production began in South Korea, while Hyundai also manufactured the Matrix in Türkiye from 2007 to 2010 to serve European demand. Within the Hyundai range, it occupied the space between conventional small cars and larger MPVs or SUVs. It was known mainly for efficient packaging, a high seating position and functional family transport rather than performance or luxury. Production ended in 2010, when the ix20 assumed Hyundai’s small-MPV role in Europe.
