The Hyundai Lafesta is a compact four-door sedan developed specifically for China and produced by Beijing Hyundai, the brand’s local joint venture. Unveiled at the 2018 Beijing motor show as a China-focused sporty sedan, it broadened the local range with a more style- and performance-oriented alternative to conventional family cars.
The Lafesta is known for its coupe-like roofline, bold front-end design, driver-focused cabin and turbocharged petrol powertrains. It occupies the sportier side of Hyundai’s compact sedan line-up, complementing the more mainstream Elantra while remaining below the larger Sonata in size and role. Specifications vary by model year and trim, but petrol versions generally combine front-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and practical five-seat accommodation.
The model has remained within one main generation, receiving updates rather than a complete redesign. Early versions used turbocharged petrol engines, while the Lafesta EV battery-electric sedan was presented in 2019 and joined Hyundai’s China-market electric range. A later facelift shifted the focus towards the Lafesta N Line, adding more assertive styling and a performance-themed identity. Despite its name, the N Line is distinct from Hyundai’s full N high-performance models. Overall, the Lafesta is recognised for blending everyday compact-sedan usability with a youthful, sporting character.
